Surfers' title-winning weekend

Bay of Plenty surfers produced a mixed bag of results at the final event of the Billabong Grom Series in Piha.

While Mount Maunganui's Rahia Ensor and Elin Tawharu clinched their overall series titles, no Bay surfer managed top spot at the end of the weekend's action across the three events.

The day started out with nice clean 1m waves which built throughout the day until the finals, where low tide, bigger swells and a strengthening sea breeze made conditions challenging.

Beating Ensor to the event title was Piha surfer Claudia Fraser, who claimed the Under-20 Girls' Division – her first win in more than six years.

Posting a 10.4 point heat total, Fraser defeated series winner Ensor, and the Sansom sisters from Alban, Bianca and Gabriella, who finished second through fourth respectively.

'There was no real difference to how I approach surfing at other events apart from being at home,” says Ensor. 'I surfed the bar all last week, I had a lot of good practice and I guess that made the difference.

'This has been a very fun series and I am stoked to finish it with a win at home” she added.

In the Boys' Under-20 division, Ensor's teammate Callum Chuter was also unable to reach top spot after a brilliant display of surfing from local Elliot Paerata-Reid.

Chuter also finished second, securing a personal best at national level, behind Paerata-Reid who dominated the event from start to finish.

Paul Moretti (Mimiwhangata) placed third for the second straight event with series winner Dune Kennings (Whangamata) finishing in fourth place.

Paerata-Reid finished with an 18.6 point heat total across the Piha Bar - a break that Paerata-Reid knows well.

'It was kind of wave catching comp,” he says, 'but I have surfed out there all my life and you had to find the wide ones. Those are the ones you get good scores on and luckily I found one so am happy about that.

'It is good fun being back in New Zealand competing, these are the guys I have always surfed with and it is good to come back. This is a fun event, it is the first event I ever competed in nine years ago.”

He will now spend the next month in New Zealand competing at the Pro Junior event at New Plymouth, training and filming before heading to Tahiti for another two events.

Both Lee Ririnui and Jonas Tawharu of the Mount came back strong in the Under-17 Boys Division, but finished in third and fourth respectively ahead of first time finalist Jack Wilson from Christchurch.
