Falls on Mount base track

Mount lifeguards were involved in the rescue of two people injured in separate falls on the Mount Maunganui base track on Sunday afternoon.

The first injury happened just as patrol members were packing up for the day at 4.30pm.

Volunteer lifeguard Jill Barron's day job skills as an ED nurse were required for a base track accident on Sunday afternoon.

Jamie Troughton and Jill Barron drove the off-road vehicle to the scene near Northwest Rock where a man, believed to be in his 60s, had slipped and fallen near the track.

'He slipped and fell face first and he had quite a nasty head wound,” says Jamie. 'There was lots of blood from his forehead and a big chunk out of his shin.

'Thankfully Jill is an emergency department nurse, and she took over.”

The man was assessed and bandaged before the pair, with the help of other base track walkers, chair lifted the man in to the vehicle.

There was another fall on the base track half an hour later when an elderly man tripped and banged his shin. Lifeguards helped him back to the holiday park where he was staying.

Only two weekends of voluntary patrols remain for the season, and both calls were away from the beach.

Sunday lifeguards were called to bring IRBs to the rescue at Matapihi, but there were stood down while en-route.

People are still swimming in the area and Jamie is advising people to check conditions. An easterly swell is expected this week which will scour the sand, and change the locations of holes and rips.
