Smash and grab on 1st Ave

A total of five parking meters appear to have been vandalised and some even ripped from their concrete foundations in an overnight ‘smash and grab' along 1st Ave.

A reporter at the scene says five parking meters between Cameron Rd and Devonport Rd on 1st Ave have been destroyed and pulled apart. There appears to be no money on the ground beside the parking meters.

SunLive has been unable to contact police for comment.

Such is the feelings about paying for parking.

Have to admit...

...while we can't condone vandalism, a tiny part of me smiled when I read this. There is so much cynical collection of Revenue by "authority" (I was fined $30 by a camera which said I was travelling 5 KM over the limit recently... no appeal, no intention to break the Law, doesn't matter... justice is being replaced by "Give us your money"...), so you can understand why some people decide to protest in an illegal and extreme way. I'm not condoning it, but when we start to doubt the fairness of the Law, I guess we have to accept there will be a reaction.

Blue ones

I like a lot more than these horrible silver ones that just endlessly take the money without just reason. Replace them all with blue ones, that is what I say.

The real rip off

We might have a smile at this because we may be anti parking charges butthe real rip off here is that these idiots have ripped off taxpayers to the tune of the missing money and the cost of replacement meters.

Of course, you're right. I guess they need to catch the offenders and make them cough up for it... It does make me think though... suppose every single parking meter in the city was smashed one night? Would they still be replaced at ratepayers' expense? How long would it take? Cheaper to tax fuel with a local tax and let us park for free. That's not fair on people who never park downtown anyway, though. Maybe a city "access charge" (like in London) so if your car crosses defined boundaries you get billed for each time. (unless you pay a concession for a certain number of visits...) Pretty easy with modern technology and a lot cheaper than parking meters, for everybody concerned. OR just stay out of the CBD.. (works for me).

I think the idea is to keep increasing the car parking costs until everyone leaves. The same idea also applies to rates as well.
