The Rotorua-based BayTrust Rescue Helicopter was called to Owhango Primary School in Taumarunui on Saturday afternoon to transport the injured Hamilton man to Waikato Hospital.

A rescue helicopter pilot says the man sustained serious head and neck injuries and due to the remote location the helicopter was used to transport him quickly to specialist care.

Onsite medics transported the man to a place suitable for the helicopter to land.

The 42nd Traverse is usually cycled from south to north, starting at Kapoors Rd on Highway 47, not far from Mount Ruapehu. From here there is a net descent of some 570 metres more than 46-odd km to Owhango. The track surface varies from gravel to mud, some stream crossings, and up hills.

What? And not a motorist in sight to blame it on or to use to get more funding for cycling trails? I think from memory 60% of cycling accidents involve no-one but the cyclist. I am however sorry for the poor man , just sick of cycling being portrayed as a 'safe outdoor healthy activity' that councils should be spending more and more money on. To the poor mans credit he was pursuing his sport on a trail and not recreating on a road.
