Shooting victim loved by family

The family of a man who died following a police shooting in Thames on Saturday are asking for privacy and respect as they prepare for his funeral.

Vaughn Te Moananui was shot following a confrontation with police and despite medical attention, he died in Thames Hospital.

The Armed Offenders Squad assisted other police during a confrontation in Thames on Satruday.

As police continue to investigate the circumstance of the shooting the incidents leading to up to it, Vaughan's family have issued the following statement.

'As a family we would like to thank everyone, including the police, for their support during this difficult and emotional time.

'Despite Vaughan's challenges, we loved him all the same, and ask that we be allowed to grieve for him in private,” say the family.

'We are also distressed at some of the recent comments and speculation made about us in the media, which are hurtful and untrue.

'We ask that media please respect our privacy and request that they do not attend Vaughan's funeral which is a private family event.

'We will not be making any further comment but will instead await the outcome of the various investigations into Vaughan's death, which need to run their course.”

Head of the police investigation, Detective Inspector Chris Page, says a scene examination of the Kopu address has revealed that prior to the confrontation with Vaughan, shots appeared to have been fired at the property in the early hours of Saturday morning.

'This is consistent with information we've received from a member of the public who reported hearing shots at about 2.30am on Saturday,” says Chris.

'Police have also now spoken with a Paeroa man, who was shot in the leg during the incident and is helping us with our inquiries. He received a superficial injury and has received medical treatment.”

Police are wanting to hear from anyone who may have information about the events on Saturday afternoon and anyone who may have information about the earlier incident in Kopu.

Information can be provided directly or the Operation Strobe Team at Thames Police Station on 07 867 9609, or anonymously via CrimeStoppers 0800 555 111.
