Armed police swarm Te Puna

UPDATE 9.31am: Vehicles in Te Puna are being stopped and searched as armed police continue to look for a man.

Spikes have also been set up are various intersections, a reporter at the scene says.

Armed police units are stationed in Te Puna this morning following unconfirmed reports of a man threatening people.

There are reports of officers at every intersection leading out of Te Puna and an eye-witness at the scene spotted four police vehicles on Te Puna Road, including a dog unit.

Police Inspector Willie Taylor says police were called to what it thought to be an incident involving family violence and the decision to arm them was based on what they know so far.

"We're taking precautions based on the information we have at this time," explains Willie.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says traffic is backedup as people try to navigate rush-hour.
