Working with the Whittakers

Spotlight on...
with Janne GuitarGirl

I met Richard, Mitz, Harvey and Robbie, through association with the Tauranga Acoustic Music Club, and we all enjoy the blending of instruments and styles, and seeing bands emerge from this ‘mix'.

I first saw this group perform a couple of years ago on The Strand in Tauranga, where they played outside on the concrete beside the Cargo Shed, and, being emcee, I introduced their act as ‘The Whittakers on a concrete slab' as opposed to a chocolate block. They did a great set and it was good to see people up dancing to their music.

The group was formed in 2012 by Richard Grautstuck, on vocals and rhythm guitar, and his partner Mitz Amores, on vocals and mandolin. And they were joined by Harvey Win, on drums, and Dave Williams, on bass – both are also ex-Woody Woodhouse Band. More recently they've been joined by ex-Blarney Boy Robbie Laven on fiddle, whistle and guitar.

The members are from England, Wales, Netherlands, Philippines and New Zealand, so a truly multi-national mix playing Celtic Fusion, with a good mix of traditional songs, original songs and covers.

Come and see them perform at the Crown & Badger on Sunday, March 19, from 2pm-5pm.

What are your thoughts on the council’s proposal to increase rates 40 per cent over the next three years?

Good, it will help pay to revitilise the city
Not good, rates are high enough now
I’m ok with an increase, but maybe not such a big one
