Hip-hop more than dance

Street dancing returned to the Bay Court stage this weekend for the second annual Bay of Plenty regional youth hip hop competition `Project'.

Hip hop offers students more than just a chance to perform, says event organiser Sarah Martin.

Deluzional from Maketu won the primary school division.

Positive flow-on effects are improvements in the dancer's behaviour, boosting confidence and helping them develop team-work and leadership skills.

'Street dance is a great vehicle to empower young people to believe in themselves and their future,” she says. 'It can grow them in all areas of their lives – mentally, emotionally and physically.”

'Everyone is amazed at what these kids were doing.”

This year's event builds on the success of the first contest with 17 school crews taking part, up from 14 last year.

First place in the Primary School section was won by Deluzional (Maketu), second by DSA (Fairhaven Te Puke), and third by Minimize (Te Awamutu).

In the intermediate category, first place was won by anzioty (Te Puke intermediate), second by elusive (Tauranga Intermediate) and shorteez (Mount Intermediate)

Te Puke's Fairhaven students DSA were second.
