Flawless waves greet junior surfers

Perfectly clean 1m waves greeted surfers on the first day of the 2016 National Scholastic Surfing Championships.

Twelve regional teams made up of the country's best junior surfers will slug it out on the waves during the week-long competition which is being held at Makorori Beach near Gisborne.

In the Under 14 Girls Division it was the Bay of Plenty team's youngest surfer Georgia Wederell (Mount Maunganui) who shone the brightest, posting a 12.07 point heat total as she powered her way to the final.

Also impressing on Monday was Whakatāne's Jack Lee in the Under 14 Boys Division, while his BOP teammates Luke Griffin (Mount Maunganui) and Jared Gebert (Ōhope) also had good performances in their respective heats.

Ten regional teams from around the country are contesting the event including the Bay of Plenty, Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Coromandel, Gisborne, Taranaki, Wellington, Canterbury and Otago.

Since the championships launched in 1990, only four regions have won the team title – Bay of Plenty, Coromandel, Waikato and Gisborne – but it's Taranaki who've headed in to this year's event as favourites on paper.

After day one of competition, Taranaki leads with 23045 points, followed by Northland with 22480 points and Coromandel in third with 22171. The Bay of Plenty currently lies in 10th with 10150 points.

If early indications are correct, there could be a new title holder at the end of the week, which would bring the Bay's four year reign at the top to an end.
