One trapped in crash near Katikati

One person was freed from a car by firefighters after a crash on a Bay of Plenty highway.

The two-car crash happened on State Highway 2, south of Katikati, about midday on Sunday.

Firefighters had freed one person who had been trapped in the car by 12.30pm, Fire Northern Communications shift manager Carren Larking said.

The accident happened by what locals described as "the onion vege place", between Rea Road and Wharawhara Road.

One car was reported to be in a ditch and another on the roadside, a police spokeswoman said.

Traffic was building up in the area as emergency services dealt with the crash.

St John Ambulance clinical control was unable to give details of patient statuses before publication.
