The man struck by a car while walking in Wharawhara Road near Katikati on Monday afternoon was flown to Waikato Hospital last night.

The 50 year old Rotorua man is critically injured with multiple fractures, states rescue helicopter media liaison Vanessa Richmond.

The helicopter was sent to Tauranga Hospital at approximately 9:30pm last night to fly the man to Waikato Hospital for further treatment.

A police spokesperson says they received a call at around 2.30pm informing them a man had been hit by a vehicle and was lying on the road.

He was reportedly conscious at the time of the call.

Police and ambulance attended, with medical treatment being provided to the man onsite.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the location about 100 metres up Wharawhara Road – and was assisting police.
