Contractors are still clearing slips following Thursday night’s storm. This slip on the Kaimai road was cleared on Friday. Photo: Supplied.

State Highway 2, through the Waimana Gorge, is closed by a large slip just south of Stanley Road.

It's expected to take weeks to clear, with the NZTA stating the highway through the gorge will probably be closed until later this month or early May.

It means the only route through to the Eastern Bay and Opotiki is via Ohope, and Wainui Road around the Ohiwa harbour.

The Pekatahi Bridge also remains closed, severing the connection between Awakeri and Taneatua.

The NZ Transport Agency is advising drivers to allow extra time for journeys.

On SH2 in the western Bay of Plenty slip clearing work continues today in the Karangahake Gorge near the Karangahake end. Stop go traffic management is in place.

There is a caution about road works on the Waikato side of the Kaimai range on SH29, with stop/go traffic management in place.

Slip clearing continues on the Coromandel with stop/go warnings and traffic management in place north of Thames on the Western side and between Whiritoa and Whangamata on the Eastern side of the peninsula.

Similar work is continuing on the Kopu/Hikowai section of SH25.

There are traffic lights operating on SH 24 near the Old Te Aroha road turn off.
