Man critical after fleeing police

A man is in a critical condition after fleeing police in Hamilton and crashing into a stationary police car.

Following a report of a stolen vehicle, Waitako police signalled to the driver of the vehicle to stop just before 11am. The car was followed for 10 minutes to an area near Hamilton Airport.

Senior Sergeant Ray Malcomson says police were in the process of deploying road spikes when the vehicle crashed into a stationary police car.

The male fleeing driver, age unknown, is in a critical condition and is currently being treated by paramedics, he says.

The Serious Crash Unit has been advised and the Independent Police Conduct Authority will be notified.
