One killed in Te Puke crash

One person is dead and another is in critical condition after a car hit a large tree in Te Puke.

Emergency services were called to the crash on Jellicoe Street just after 6pm.

A Police spokesperson confirmed one person had died.

The spokesperson says another was taken to Tauranga Hospital in critical condition after being freed from the vehicle.

"The driver of the people-mover-type vehicle died at the scene of the crash, which saw the vehicle collide with a tree on Jellicoe Street around 6pm.

"The passenger in the vehicle remains in hospital."

The Serious Crash Unit continues to investigate the circumstances of the crash, and there is no further information available at this stage.

People with information about the crash, and who haven't already spoken with police, are asked to contact their nearest police station.
