Tauranga's Peter Burling has finally brought the America's Cup back to his hometown for a visit.

The Tauranga Boys' College alumnus arrived at the Tauranga waterfront with the Auld Mug by boat at 1pm today, greeted by a large crowd of local fans and supporters.

Plenty of people braved the wind and dicey weather to catch a glimpse of sport's oldest trophy, which Emirates Team New Zealand won in June.

Parades were held for the victors in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin upon their triumphant return in July, but Tauranga residents have had to wait several weeks for their chance to attend a celebration.

Peter and his Emirates Team New Zealand colleagues disembarked at The Strand this afternoon, before moving to the Edgewater Fan for their presentation.

He also brought with him a few more former Tauranga Boys' College students, who have been an integral part of the team's campaign to reclaim the Cup.

Boat builder Ricky Bray, engineer Andy Kensington and Emirates Team New Zealand board member Greg Horton are all former Tauranga Boys' College student. Other Emirates Team New Zealand members in the party are hydraulics engineer Vito Vattuone, naval architect Alix De Lamotte and cup custodian Norman Newton.

They were greeted by a haka from Tauranga Boys' College pupils, a short speech from Mayor Greg Brownless, followed by Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club Commodore Nick Wrinch - before the meet and greet began with people filing past to shake hands and have a photo opportunity with Peter, the Cup and team members.
