Rain forecast for this afternoon

Video and photos by Rosalie Liddle Crawford.

Today we will see clouds increasing with drizzle turning to rain later in the afternoon, and light winds.

It's a three-clothing layer day with a high of 16 and an overnight low of 9 degrees.

On this day in NZ history in 1871 Ernest Rutherford was born near Nelson.

He was a physicist who came to be known as the father of nuclear physics.

The creator of modern atomic physics and forerunner of the nuclear age, Rutherford was one of the greatest scientists of the 20th century.

He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1908. Rutherford claimed his inventiveness was honed on the challenges of helping out on his parents' farm: "We haven't the money, so we've got to think".

Also on this day in world history in 1963 a Hot Line communications link was installed between Moscow and Washington, DC.

A quote for today from Twitter "Be somebody who makes everybody feel like a somebody." A good way to do that is simply say hello.

Check out more of our weather update on our video which was filmed opposite Pacific Ave near Mount Main Beach this morning.

Have a great day!
