Mother accused of feeding battery to son

A mother is accused feeding her young son a battery and causing her daughter to go on medication after telling doctors the child was having seizures, a court has heard.

The mother has gone on trial at the High Court in Auckland, where she has denied nine charges of ill-treating and neglecting a child.

In her opening address to the jurors, Melissa Hammer said the woman suffocated her new baby and filmed him lying in his cot as his condition worsened.

Doctors who later saw the video believed it was intentional and alerted the police.

They found the woman had also taken her daughter to hospital and to doctors more than 100 times.

The Crown said the symptoms were fabricated and caused her daughter to undergo invasive medical tests and medication.

But the mother's lawyer has told the jury that there are two sides to every story and has urged them to keep an open mind.

Sue Gray told the jurors that her client suffered from debilitating anxiety which made her over-protective.

She said the medication her daughter was put on caused side effects which made her unwell and that was complicated by the girl having ADHD.
