UPDATE: One person is dead following a crash in the Bay of Plenty tonight.

Police have confirmed that a woman in her 40s has died at the scene of a crash at the intersection of SH5 and SH30.

The two vehicle crash happened near Whakarewarewa around 6pm.

"A man, the driver of the other vehicle, has suffered moderate injuries.

"Diversions will be in place for some time while the serious crash unit investigates."

Emergency services are dealing with a serious crash near Rotorua.

Police received reports of a two-car crash just south of Rotorua, near Whakarewarewa, at about 6pm.

The crash is near State Highway 5 and State Highway 30.

Police say two people have been seriously injured in the crash.

Meanwhile, Tauranga Police are responding to a crash on Parton Road.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says a car has gone through a steel wire rope barrier on the highway near Parton Road.
