Vandals cut home's Christmas lights

A family in Papamoa has had the Christmas lights decorating their Calypso Drive home cut by vandals.

Shay Ridley says the lights were deliberately cut on Wednesday night, but didn't discover the damage until the following evening.

'We came back from dinner on Thursday night and it looked like the cat had ripped the lights,” she says.

'But they had been cut deliberately in lots of places, and our neighbours also had the same thing happen to them.”

Shay's father Shane Ridley has managed to fix the wires with a bit of solder, but is at a loss to see why someone would cut them in the first place.

'These are solar lights, so they're not particularly bright and don't flash into people's houses,” he says.

'We reported it, which is about all you can do. Not a lot of police seem to come down our way, though.”

Police confirmed to SunLive they received a report of wilful damage to electrical wires at a property on Calypso Drive earlier this week, but did not say how many other such incidents they had investigated.
