More field crews helping storm response

Powerco has ramped up restoration efforts to get supply back on to regions affected by the storm.

Field crews have been brought in from other areas to repair the damaged network in Coromandel and Tauranga.

Strong winds and flooding caused significant damage to the network on Thursday evening and again yesterday.

While 5000 customers have had their supply restored, around 3000 are still without power.

Powerco Network Operations Manager Phil Marsh expected field crews to make good progress today.

'The bad weather has eased and we are hoping to get helicopters up to inspect damage in more remote areas.

'Our focus is on making the network safe and we encourage people to report any lines down.”

People should take extreme care around fallen power lines and keep at least 4m away. Report downed lines to emergency services on 111 or Powerco on 0800 27 27 27 immediately. Powerco may not be aware of all power cuts so it is important customers log their faults with retailers.

Powerco's outage page, http://www.powerco.co.nz/power-cuts/, only shows faults affecting more than 25 properties.
