A two-car collision on State Highway Two at Waikino, Hauraki left one person dead and another in a critical condition last night.

Emergency services were called to the scene at around 9pm on Friday.

A police spokesperson confirmed that one person died at the scene, while another person was flown to Waikato Hospital with critical injuries.

A third person was seriously injured and was taken to Waikato Hosptial via ambulance.

The road was closed and diversions were initially put in place.

The Serious Crash Unit were called to the scene to begin the early stages of their investigation into what caused the crash.
