Traffic is backed up on Turret Road after a car crashed down a bank this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the scene just before 3pm due to reports of a vehicle submerged in the water.

However, a police spokesperson says those initial reports were incorrect, and the car is only on the bank.

"Everyone is now out of the vehicle."

A SunLive reader who contacted the newsroom via Facebook says all three emergency services are present, with traffic backed up towards Turret Road.

She says it looks as though a car may have hit another vehicle coming towards Maungatapu, causing the crash.

Another caller says the crash looks to be just past the bridge on the Maungatapu side.

Seriously....if you've made the conscious decision to operate your vehicle, please ensure you are in fact operating it. Make that your only task. These machines don't drive themselves. They don't take means into their own wheels when you decide to check a txt or snap a selfie. Come on folks. One lapse in your judgement could be another persons admittance to Hospital.
