'Warm tongue' drives Tauranga weather

A warm tongue of moist tropical air is driving Tauranga weather today as it lies across the central north island.

Depending where it meanders is whether Tauranga has heavy showers or not so heavy showers.

'There was previously a watch for the Bay of Plenty area but that is no longer in force. There is a chance of some heavier showers but we are hot expecting warning levels,” says MetService Meteorologist Josh Griffin.

'There's kind of a trough of really moist air extending over the North Island at the moment. So right now that's a bit further inland of where Tauranga is so it's going to be in that general area pretty much throughout the day today.

'It's like a really warm tongue of air spreading down from the tropics stretching across much of the north island and going through the central areas at the moment. It's just kind of where that tongue of air tracks throughout the day.”

There is a low risk of thunderstorms in the Western Bay of Plenty just inland of Tauranga. Accompanying this could be some heavier falls of 10-125mm an hour, but this is low risk for Tauranga, says Josh.

Tauranga is on the northern fringes of the tongue at the moment.

'There is a risk it could kind of meander over you guys and kind of drift back off and on throughout the day,” says Josh.

'It will be pretty humid for you guys I imagine.”

The MetService has also issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the Bay of Plenty.
