Helping out about surf lifesavers

Papamoa surf lifesavers are appealing for community support.

Papamoa Surf Lifesavers are calling for help to continue patrolling one of the longest patrolled beaches in the country - a 14km stretch of beach from Sandhurst Drive to the end of Papamoa Beach Road.

This week, the Papamoa Surf Lifesaving Club is calling on the public to help them keep families safe, says club directors Poppy Crouch & Robynne Cabusao.

Surf Life Saving New Zealand is an essential rescue service as well as a charity that receives no government funding and relies totally on the support of the community, sponsors and grants to continue its work of keeping Kiwis safe on our beaches

'This summer's dangerous surf conditions have seen lifeguards at the club, and at the new Papamoa East temporary summer tower kept busy with more rescues on our stretch of beach than in previous years,” say Poppy and Robynne.

A clear correlation of the growing population in the area and at times poor decision making on the part of the public.

More than 80 per cent of men over estimate their ability in the surf and often it is parents helping their children that get into trouble.

The drowning statistics make meagre reading for a developed country.

This is one of the largest patrolled beaches in the country.

The Papamoa Surf Club will launch its annual Summer Appeal today and it will run through until February 25.

Members, lifeguards and nippers will be doing the rounds in the Papamoa region calling on your support by shaking buckets for your loose change.

Make a donation during the Summer Appeal so we can be there for you when you need us. All monies collected in Papamoa will go directly towards the Papamoa Surf Lifesaving Club and will help the Surf Club keep Papamoa beach safe.

If you miss our collectors and would still like to help then go online to the clubs ‘Give a Little' page and donate there.
