A murder investigation has been launched in Opotiki after a woman was found dead in Wharf Street, Opotiki today.

Around 1:15pm Opotiki Police responding to a reported domestic incident found a woman deceased in a residential property near the CBD, says Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Standen, Eastern Bay of Plenty Police.

“It appears the deceased has sustained injuries to her face and arms that have been fatal,” says Greg. “A homicide investigation has begun, and the identity of the woman is not yet formally confirmed.

“Any further information will be released when available, however this is not expected to be tonight.”

Reports on social media say police are looking for a black sedan driven by a sole male of Maori descent aged in his 30s. Police had cordons in place and were stopping all black vehicles in the area.
