Police can now release the name of the woman who died following an incident at Huria Marae in Tauranga on Thursday night.

She was Ariana Eva Mahu, of Tauranga.

Police say the 37-year-old was taken to Tauranga Hospital in a critical condition, where she later died.

"Police were called to a local marae at 11.50pm," says Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Barron.

"The woman has suffered injuries to her neck and was transported to hospital. She died from her injuries a short time later."

A 21-year-old man, who has interim name suppression, has been charged with murder in relation to her death and appeared in court on Friday.

He has been remanded for a psychiatric report to assess his fitness to make a plea and stand trial.
