UPDATED 3.09PM: A 'student who made up a story” sparked a police callout for an alleged gunman at Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology Windermere campus, says head of marketing and communications Meg Jones.

'There is no gunman. There is a young student that has learning difficulties and he's a bit renowned apparently for coming out with these sort of things. So we will be monitoring that and figuring out how we deal with that.

'He's not supposed to watch TV because he picks up these sorts of things, but in this case he must have. We will try and contact his parents and see where we go from here.”

Police were called to the campus about 10am on Monday after receiving reports about a man on campus with a gun.

They left after failing to find the ‘gunman'. SunLive was contacted by people concerned about the police presence.

'It was a storm in a teacup,” says Meg.
