A hot day forecast for a Dame's birthday

Today we are expecting a mainly fine day, but with a chance of an afternoon shower and light winds.

It's a one-clothing-layer day today with a high of 27 and an overnight low of 19 degrees. Humidity is 94 per cent.

High tide is at 11am and low tide at 5.10pm. There's a sea swell of .5m, sea temperature is 21 degrees and sunset tonight is at 7.46pm.

If you're going fishing today the best fish bite time is from 7.30 to 10.30pm.

This day in NZ history in 1830 was the outbreak of the 'Girls' War' at Kororāreka. The so-called ‘Girls‘ War' was fought between northern and southern Ngāpuhi at Kororāreka (now Russell). Up to 100 Māori were killed or wounded in the fighting, after which the northern alliance took control of the important settlement.

In 1947 on this day the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra debuted. Classical music lovers packed Wellington's Town Hall for the debut performance of New Zealand's first national orchestra.

This day in world history in 1521 Ferdinand Magellan discovered Guam. In 1853 Giuseppe Verdi's opera La traviata premiered in Venice. In 1899 aspirin was patented following Felix Hoffman's discoveries about the properties of acetylsalicylic acid. In 1960 the Swiss granted women the right to vote in municipal elections.

Today is the birthday of painter, sculptor and architect Michelangelo Buonarroti, who was born on this day in 1475. It is also the birthday of Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, NZ's operatic soprano, who was born in 1944.

Michelangelo once said "The greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it."
