Accused murderer’s sanity in question

The man accused of murdering 37-year-old Ariana Eva Mahu at Huria Marae on February 22 is to remain in custody at Hamilton's Henry Bennett Centre, while he undergoes further treatment.

In an AVL hearing in the High Court at Tauranga today, Justice Sarah Katz says issues about the 21-year-old accused's sanity and fitness to plead have been raised in the psychiatric report called for at his earlier appearance on February 23.

The psychiatric report recommends the accused be remanded in custody at the Henry Bennett Centre for a further four to six weeks treatment before his fitness to stand trial is again assessed.

Name suppression is continued until the next court appearance which is set down for May 16 at 9am.

Police were called to the marae in Judea about 11.50pm on February 22 after reports of an assault. Ariana Eva Mahu, died in Tauranga Hospital the following morning.
