Good day for a sea swim

Today we are expecting fine spells and occasional showers, possibly heavy with thunderstorms from afternoon. Also light winds.

It's a one-clothing-layer day today with a high of 24 and an overnight low of 17 degrees. Humidity is 92 per cent.

High tide is at 12.30pm and low tide at 6.40pm. There's a sea swell of .6m, sea temperature is a warm 22 degrees and sunset tonight is at 7.43pm.

If you're going fishing today the best fish bite time is from 5pm to 7pm.

This day in NZ history in 1929 the first 'talkie' drew crowds in Wellington. Moviegoers flocked to see Frank Borzage's 'Street Angel', a silent picture with a recorded musical soundtrack, at Wellington's Paramount Theatre.

Today is the birthday of Scottish author Kenneth Grahame. Born in 1859 he wrote 'The Wind in the Willows'.

It's also the birthday of Otto Hahn. Born in 1879, he was the co-discoverer of nuclear fission.

George Washington, who delivered the first State of the Union address on this day in 1790, once said "Associate with men of good quality if you esteem your own reputation; for it is better to be alone than in bad company."
