Good morning Sunners and welcome to a fire blazing day this weekend.

If you've always wondered exactly what the Tauranga Fire Brigade do, now is your chance.

The Tauranga Fire Brigade recruitment day will allow members of the public to talk to fire fighters about what they do, find out about the equipment they use, try it out and see if they have what it takes to volunteer.

Station officer Jeff Francis says the day is a great chance for those interested in a career in the industry to get up close with volunteers.

'Being a fire fighter is not a nine-to-five commitment,” says Jeff. 'When you are on call, you have to be ready to respond at the drop of a hat and tackle whatever challenge you may be about to face.

'It's not just about putting out fires - calls can be to any number of incidents, from medical emergencies and flooding to motor vehicle accidents and chemical spills.”

Volunteer fire fighters from Tauranga will be at the Chapel Street shopping centre from 9am-12pm.

In Mount Maunganui around 1000 swimmers aged seven to 82-years-old are gearing up to conquer the surf this morning.

The Generation Home Sand to Surf event is into its 12th year, bringing Kiwis from afar as well as travellers overseas to Mount Maunganui.

With distances designed for swimmers of all abilities including children, those looking for a personal challenge and more competitive long distance swimmers, the event has become one of the most popular in the seven-swim season.

There will be a 200m OceanKids, 500m Give It A Go, 1km Step It Up, 2.6km I'm Going Long race.

'This year we have a huge range of swimmers, from youngsters who are setting their sights on their first big swim, to those smashing a personal goal, to more seasoned swimmers who do it every year,” says event Director Scott Rice.

'That's the great thing about this type of event - anyone who puts their mind to it can cross that finish line.”

The Banana Boat Ocean Swim Series runs from until April 2018 with the Mount Maunganui on today from 10am.
