Making a splash for kiwi kids

Having your temperature drop for a great cause is what many people have stepped forward to do today for little kiwi kids born with heart defects.

The refreshing signature 360 Heart Stopper Challenge event saw several teams of 4 to 6 people take the plunge to raise money in support of children with heart conditions and their families.

'The 360 Heart Stopper Challenge is a simple, fun event where you can challenge yourself and do a lot of good at the same time,” says Heart Kids Bay of Plenty chair Rachael Parkes.

Teams have to plunge into a pool of water nicely chilled to 10° degree for 360 seconds in support of the 12 babies born every week with a heart defect in New Zealand.

The icy plunge simulated the situation surrounding any heart surgery, where a patient is put on a by-pass machine and the heart is slowed down to a crawl using icy slush and this also brings down the person's metabolism.

'A lot of teams are made up of people who are related to a child with heart issues, but companies we deal with have also put together teams.

'We're hoping to raise some much-needed funds for the amazing charity behind this chilly event.”

Heart Kids NZ has been around for over 30 years providing support for families while they spend extended periods of time in the National Children's Hospital and when they are back at home in their local community.
