Road closed following serious crash

UPDATED 5.51PM: Maketu Road in Paengaroa remains closed as emergency services deal with a serious crash.

A motorbike and car crashed on the road, near the Tauranga Eastern Link, just before 3.30pm.

A police spokesperson says the motorcyclist sustained serious injuries.

"Diversions are in place and motorists are asked to avoid the area."

EARLIER:

Police and ambulance services are at the scene of a serious crash between a car and a motorcyclist this afternoon.

A police spokesperson says they arrived on the scene at around 3.40pm, on Maketu Road near Te Tumu Road.

She says the motorcyclist is currently in a critical condition, and police are looking to put diversions in place to cordon off the area.

The Serious Crash Unit has been notified.
