Western Bay of Plenty residents are reporting feeling the ground shaking following an earthquake overnight.
Several SunLive readers have emailed in saying the quake at 9.50pm gave their house quite a shake.
According to GeoNet, there was a 3.4 magnitude earthquake 35km south-west of Tauranga.
While the shaking is being described as 'weak” by GeoNet, the shallowness of it could be why a lot of people felt it – it had a focal depth of 10km.

We're in Tauranga and felt a short shake at approx. 9.55pm last night. Wasn't sure if it was a quake at the time as it was so quick. Past quakes we've experienced have been more rolling and longer in duration.
