The NZ flag and today's weather

Today we are expecting a partly cloudy day with a chance of showers. Also easterly breezes.

It's a one-clothing-layer day today with a high of 23 and an overnight low of 15 degrees. Humidity is 70 per cent.

High tide is at 9.40am and low tide at 4pm. There's sea swell of about .7m, with a sea temperature of 21 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 7.25pm.

If you're going fishing today the best fish bite time is between 6pm and 9pm.

This day in NZ history in 1834 New Zealand's first recognised flag was chosen. A New Zealand flag was first suggested in 1830 after Sydney customs officials had seized a Hokianga-built ship.

On this day in world history, in 1739 in India, Nadir Shah of Persia occupied Delhi and took possession of the Peacock throne.

In 1760 the Great Fire of Boston destroyed 349 buildings. In 1792 in Paris, the Legislative Assembly approved the use of the guillotine.

In 1815 Napoleon Bonaparte entered Paris and began his 100-day rule. In 1841 Edgar Allan Poe's The Murders in the Rue Morgue, considered the first detective story, was published.

On this day in 1982 U.S. scientists returned from Antarctica with the first land mammal fossils found there.

In 1987 the United States approved AZT, a drug that is proven to slow the progress of AIDS.

Today is the birthday of Roman poet Publius Ovidius Naso, known as Ovid in the English-speaking world. He was born in 43BC, lived during the reign of Augustus and wrote "Fortune and love favor the brave" and "Take rest; a field that has rested gives a bountiful crop." He also wrote "Habits change into character."
