Anna Paquin, Alcatraz, and your weather

Today we are expecting sunny spells with the odd shower from the afternoon and light winds.

It's a one-clothing-layer day today with a high of 22 and an overnight low of 15 degrees. Humidity is 95 per cent.

High tide is at 10.20am and low tide at 4.40pm. There's a sea swell of about .9m, which will remain over 1m for the next couple of days. Sea temperature is 20 degrees and sunset tonight is at 7.24pm.

If you're going fishing today the best fish bite time is between 7pm and 10pm.

This day in NZ history in 1994 Kiwis won Oscars for 'The Piano'. Eleven-year-old Anna Paquin became the first New Zealander to win an Academy Award for acting when she picked up the best supporting actress award for her role as Flora McGrath in the acclaimed historical drama 'The Piano'. She was the second youngest recipient of this award in Oscar history.

In 2003 Race Relations Day was first formally celebrated with the theme, 'Hands Up for Kiwis of Every Race and Place'

In world history on this day in 1556 Thomas Cranmer, the Archbishop of Canterbury, was burned at the stake at Oxford. In 1617 Pocahontas (Rebecca Rolfe) died of either small pox or pneumonia while in England with her husband, John Rolfe. In 1788 almost the entire city of New Orleans, Louisiana, was destroyed by fire.

In 1951 Secretary of Defense George C. Marshall reported that the U.S. military had doubled to 2.9 million since the start of the Korean War. In 1963 Alcatraz Island, the federal penitentiary in San Francisco Bay, California, closed. In 1965 the United States launched Ranger 9, the last in a series of unmanned lunar explorations.

In 1980 on this day President Jimmy Carter announced to the U.S. Olympic Team that they would not be participating in the 1980 Summer Games in Moscow as a boycott against Soviet intervention in Afghanistan.

Today is the birthday of German composer Johann Sebastian Bach. Born in 1685 he once said "The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul."
