Radio personality Jay-Jay Harvey has made a fleeting stop into the Bay of Plenty, attracting thousands of self-proclaimed ‘fan-girls' during her visit.

The reason for the visit is all part of a current MoreFM on air promotion, where Jay-Jay has been challenged to an initiation by her new co-host Jason Gunn.

Jay-Jay has joined the team after nearly 23 years as a breakfast announcer on The EdgeFM.

As part of her initiation she must meet at least one per cent of More FM's listeners before she starts the show, and take as many selfies with you as humanly possible – the goal is 5000.

SunLive met up with Jay-Jay during her stop outside Mount Maunganui College yesterday afternoon where a number of students and community members had stopped in to get their selfies.

'It's been quite hectic at times, but really fun, it's actually quite an adventure,” says Jay-Jay. 'I've met some really cool people and some interesting characters.

'We started in Thames, went to Thames High School, the local Pak'n'Save and some businesses that had requested we stop in.

'There's such a different vibe in every town we've been to it's been really cool soaking that up, and we're only early into the trip.”

She says the most interesting person she's met so far is a woman named Shirley.

'She was sitting outside an antique shop having a cigarette, she doesn't have a phone, she didn't know what Instagram is and she didn't know exactly where she knew me from but she knew she'd seen me somewhere. She was a classic kiwi.”

Tauranga was the second of 22 stops Jay-Jay will make during her initiation, with the next stop being in Rotorua today.

'We have three weeks, and thirteen days of stops. It's all part of my initiation before I start with Jase on the drive show at the end of April.

'I have to get 5000 selfies with our listeners. I've done about 700 so far, if we do about 400 a day we'll get there I think.”

Those who got a selfie with Jay-Jay during her stop to Tauranga yesterday are encouraged to upload their selfie with Jay-Jay to Instagram with the hashtag #jaywatchmorefm.
