Today we are expecting fine spells, and a few showers, with easterly breezes.

It's a one-clothing-layer day today with a high of 22 and an overnight low of 16 degrees. Humidity is 95 per cent.

High tide is at 11.10am and low tide at 5.30pm. There's sea swell of about 1.2m, with a sea temperature of 20 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 7.22pm.

If you're going fishing today the best fish bite time is between 4pm and 6pm.

This day in NZ history in 1902 George von Zedlitz arrived in Wellington. Victoria College's first professor of modern languages joined the fledgling institution's four foundation professors.

In world history on this day in 1904 the first colour photograph was published in the London Daily Illustrated Mirror. In 1935 Persia was renamed Iran.

In 1946 the first U.S.-built rocket to leave the Earth's atmosphere reached a 50-mile height.

Today is the birthday of French mime Marcel Marceau. Born in 1923, he once said "Do not the most moving moments of our lives find us all without words?"
