Hop hitting Whitianga

Some of last year’s talent. File photos.

Hundreds of retro vehicles in all shapes and sizes are set to turn the heads of those on the streets of Whitianga today, as part of what has come to be known as the nation's favourite event.

The convoy is touching down in the town for the highly anticipated Whitianga Beach Party which kicks off from 11am.

It's all part of the 2018 Beach Hop and today marks the second of a five-day event which stretches from its warm up party held in Waihi yesterday, to Whitianga and Whangamata.

Vehicles will arrive at Buffalo Beach Reserve this morning around 10.40am, before parading into town, along Buffalo Beach Road and down The Esplanade, Blacksmith Lane and into Albert Street.

The cars will then park up on Albert Street, Taylors Mistake, The Esplanade, Northern Reclamation and Blacksmith Lane.

Later in the afternoon there's also an aerobatic air display to the east of the Whitianga River Estuary opposite the Whitianga Marina.

The display will last about 15 minutes and can be viewed from Taylor's Mistake and the Northern Reclamation. The display is weather dependent.

Following this there's also the Chevy v Ford drag race, which is set to get loud, and to wrap it all up there'll also be a prize giving between Westpac and Frankies at about 2.30pm.

The Hop is then hitting Onemana for the 'Castrol Edge Thunder Cruise' tomorrow, before heading back to Whangamata over the weekend for the grand parade, vintage markets, live bands, auctions, pin up shows, hot rods, classic cars, retro caravans and motorbike shows.
