Museum will keep tourists local

‘Of mushrooms and museums' (The Weekend Sun, March 16) makes me think the writer knows as much about museums as he does mushrooms!

A museum, free to locals, would be ideal to help keep the many tens of thousands of visitors we have here at the Mount local, rather than being bussed to other parts of the Bay. They can then learn about Maori history and the many Europeans who also helped New Zealand become one of the world's tourist destinations.

Lets see now... A dey in Rotorua and even Hobbiton or as an alternative a day in a Museum? Not really a question is it. You need to upskill here, realisation of how it is, Tauranga is the gateway to the region for Cruise ships, for obvious reasons, there is a port here hence why ships come and go and why people do the same. The only achievement of a Muesum will be to create: more TCC staff on huge salaries (Art Gallery is proof of that), massive losses (Art Gallery is proof of that), massive debt created (Baypark is proof of that) and enorous losses annually added to rates (Art Gallery is proof of that). When you realise these things, then any perceived benefit is quickly and easily eliminated many fold.
