The driver involved in a crash on State Highway 29A at Maungatapu has died.
Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager acting Senior Sergeant Wayne Hunter says a 'suspected stroke is behind the cause of Sunday morning crash.
'The elderly male has since died,” says Wayne.
'The vehicle drove down the Maungatapu off-ramp at speed, crossing both lanes of the highway and up the bank on the opposite side before falling back down onto the Maungatapu bound lane.
'No other vehicles were struck as he crossed the highway.”
Police were called to the crash about 10.42am.
Police closed the busy highway between Maungatapu and Baypark for about two hours while the Police Serious Crash Unit investigated the scene.

Now we know the cause of the crash is the bridge still too narrow and the speed limit too high for this area as the comments made the other day suggested? Full facts required before blame directed at inanimate objects...

well they getting better but still not short enough, major highway i think still inside city boundary cleaned up within an hour
