This year's Travel Safe ‘Design your own helmet' competition received 939 entries from 17 Tauranga and Western Bay of Plenty schools.

The annual helmet competition celebrates the efforts of local students and teachers, striving to make their communities safer.

Council received entries in five categories: 5-6 years old, 7-8 years olds, 9-10 years old, intermediate school students, and the teachers' category.

The winners were announced by Deputy Mayor Kelvin Clout this morning at council chambers this morning, and each received a helmet with their design professionally airbrushed on by local artist Anthony Brodie.
