Maungatapu Underpass to be connected

Work is to begin next week on connecting the Maungatapu Underpass project with the existing local roads.

From April 16, there will be lane diversions, speed restrictions, unsealed surfaces, off peak and night works on Welcome Bay Road near Greenwood Park.

On Welcome Bay Road, near Awanui Place, there will be lane diversions in place, speed restrictions and temporary pedestrian diversions.

This work will affect travel through the area, and is expected to take up to two weeks during the school holidays. The work is weather dependent.

NZ Transport Agency Projects Team Manager, John McCarthy says the agency will do as much work as it can during the school holidays to minimise the impact on traffic.

'A majority of the work will be done at night however road users can expect some delays during the day due to speed restrictions.

'We understand delays can be frustrating but we'd like to urge people to take care when travelling through these areas, and understand the responsibility they have to protect themselves and their passengers, as well as all other road users and construction workers."

Resurfacing work of the SH29A Hairini and Maungatapu roundabouts is expected to take place in mid-May, while work to connect the underpass with Turret Road and with Hairini Street is expected to start in late-May. This work is also weather dependent.

The work on the underpass is expected to be completed in June, weather and other factor permitting. However there will still be work that needs to be completed on the local roads that tie in to the project.

Once completed, the $45 million Maungatapu underpass will be a two-lane link underneath the Maungatapu roundabout and a separated cycle and walk way, that will improve the traffic flow on the state highway around the Maungatapu and Hairini roundabouts.

The underpass will separate state highway and local traffic, and make travel safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

Is it really going to make a difference to traffic flow? Cant see it fixing the bottle neck down at Turret Road.

No effect at all except for two things: First it will provide more parking space in the mornings to park and wait while the traffic merges across the Causeway as usual - no real change at all, and second it will only provide a choice of exit paths once and only after one has exited the Causeway. In essence it is a $50 million dollor flash as carpark in disguise! Nothing more has been achieved that that. the time to traverse will be the same, maybe slower as more lanes of traffic will need to merge hence slowing all down more perhaps? You can not otherwise put a better spin on it.

I would have designed that different and saved a few $million ,that at $46 million is a joke,it could have been more efficient had they asked for ideas, but im not just out of school with a Clipboard and Hi Vis and over seeing this, Gosh what a waste of money, and that little slip road off 29 is a have that would have taken all that traffic instead of going all the way round to welcome bay Roundabout,my thoughts only on this,NZTA and TCC have a MONEY tree and spend it on rubbish, but thats another story, Sunlive being the BEST for News, Thankyou,10-4 out. phew.

....it was never meant to, if (and only if) I am correct, the major funding came from the NZTA for this project, the 'local road' situation (ie: Turret Road) is more of a 'local road' funding issue...ie TCC...I would say it could be a major plus if (IF) the Turret Road situation can be resolved hopefully in the near future. The major winners I would say from this would be SH29A movement from/to Hamilton/Mt Maunganui for heavy transport mainly particularly if it becomes possible to remove/reduce the traffic lights at the Hairini roundabout...just my thoughts...any others?

Pretty quick
