Name release in Kawerau death

The man who died during a police chase on River Road Kawerau early on Friday has been named.

He was 25-year-old local man Stephen Elijah Harrison.

Police extend their sympathies to Mr Harrison's family.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Police observed a vehicle travelling at high speed on River Road.at 3.30am. The vehicle again was observed around 3.37am with its lights turned off.

In a previous statement Police say they attempted to stop the vehicle, however it accelerated and failed to stop. The vehicle fled and a short time later lost control and crashed into a tree.

The sole occupant of the vehicle died at the scene.

"My staff do not want to ever see an outcome like this,” says Superintendent Andy McGregor, District Commander Bay of Plenty. "It's an absolute tragedy to lose anyone on our roads. My condolences go out to his family."
