Singing in the Maori New Year

The Maori Sidesteps are like the Howard Morrison Quartet, Prince Tui Teka, and Billy T James all rolled into one.

An awesome evening of music, comedy, and whakawhanaungatanga, or, kinship, awaits one and all when one of the top Maori showbands in Aotearoa makes its triumphant return to Tauranga in June.

To celebrat Matariki, The Maori New Year, Baycourt Presents is bringing The Maori Sidesteps to the Baycourt Community & Arts Centre's Addison Theatre at the end of next month.

The Maori Sidesteps are a contemporary showband renowned for putting their own political spin on well-known songs, as well as their flair for entertaining crowds with soulful harmonies, satirical skits and off-the-cuff comedy.

Think of them as the Howard Morrison Quartet, Prince Tui Teka, and Billy T James all rolled into one.

'If you were lucky enough to catch The Māori Sidesteps' concert at the Tauranga Arts Festival last year then you will know how incredibly talented and entertaining they are,” says Baycourt manager Megan Peacock Coyle.

'Not only can they hold a tune, the group's use of comedy and satire to address serious issues is brilliant. The Maori Sidesteps are that special kind of funny; they will make you think as tears stream down your face from laughter.”

Brought together by Tikapa Productions, The Maori Sidesteps stars five of Aotearoa's finest Maori and Pasifika performers – Cohen Holloway (What We Do in the Shadows), Rob Mokaraka (Shot Bro), Jamie McCaskill (The Insider's Guide to Happiness), Jerome Leota (The Naked Samoans), and Erroll Anderson (Ghost in the Shell).

Known for their popular self-titled web series and online entertainment, The Maori Sidesteps will provide an unmissable evening of nostalgia that will have audiences singing along and laughing out loud at the same time.

To celebrate Matariki, Baycourt has created special one-off ticket prices for The Maori Sidesteps concert, with tickets ranging from $15.00 to $29.90, excluding service fees. Family passes and group bookings are also available.

'Because Baycourt is bringing The Maori Sidesteps to Tauranga we're in a position to keep prices really affordable for our community and patrons,” said Peacock Coyle.

'It's also Matariki, so we want as many people as we can to head in to Baycourt to enjoy a song and laugh with their whanau and friends, and celebrate The Maori New Year with us.”
