A mild autumn day

The weather forecast today is for occasional showers. Also northwesterlies, becoming gusty this afternoon.

It's a two-clothing layer day today with a high of 18 and an overnight low of 11 degrees. Humidity is 98 per cent.

High tide is at 12.10pm and low tide is at 6.30pm. There's a sea swell of .2m with a sea temperature of 18 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 5.07pm.

In world history on this day in 1882 the United States formally recognized Korea. In 1908 the Wright brothers registered their flying machine for a U.S.patent. In 1990 in the Middle East, North and South Yemen merged to become a single state.

In 2004 an EF4 tornado with a record-setting width of 2.5 miles wiped out Hallam, Nebraska, killing 1 person. Also in 2004 Fahrenheit 9-11, directed by Michael Moore, became the first documentary ever to win the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

In 2011 an EF5 tornado killed at least 158 people in Joplin, Missouri, the largest death toll from a tornado since record-keeping began in 1950.

Today is the birthday of German composer Richard Wagner, who was born in 1813. It's also the birthday of Albrecht von Graefe.

Born in 1828, he was a German eye surgeon, and founder of modern opthamology.

And today is the birthday of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Born in 1859 he was an author and creator of the Sherlock Holmes series.

He once said "It has long been an axiom of mine that the little things are infinitely the most important."
