Envirohub Bay of Plenty's Sustainable Art Challenge has returned for another year, with sustainable fashion and short films at the forefront of celebrations this weekend.

On Sunday, an awards ceremony will be held at Baycourt to find the winners of the ‘Trash to Fashion' and ‘Short Movie' categories.

Envirohub Bay of Plenty general manager Laura Wragg says there are two subcategories in the ‘Trash to Fashion' competition – Wearable Arts and Fashion.

'The Wearable Arts entries tend to be more ‘out there'' outfits than those in the Fashion category,” she says.

'The only real constraint to what people can use to make the outfit is that they can't buy the primary materials. They must either be recycled, upcycled, or from the landfill.”

Entrants are judged across three age groups – Intermediate, Secondary, and Tertiary – for the both the fashion and the films, which ‘can be about anything that resonates with the filmmaker in terms of sustainability'.

Laura says it's been a pleasure to see contestants return year after year.

'We're finding some of them have been entering since it started, so it's been great to watch them grow over the years.”

On Sunday, the entrants will rehearse their fashion show during the day, before parading their designs in front of judges from 3pm.

During the judging process, the short movies will be shown, as these have already been pre-judged.

Attendance at this event is free, but seats are filling up at Baycourt fast. To reserve a place, visit www.envirohub.org.nz.
