Cold showers in Welcome Bay

No hot water, no street lights, frequent power outages.

If you live in Welcome Bay you may have experienced all three recently but Powerco says the three issues are not related.

Homes throughout Welcome Bay, Hairini and Ohauiti were without hot water last Thursday, prompting dozens of comments on the Welcome Bay Noticeboard Facebook page.

Many people had contacted plumbers and electricians, believing the fault was with their own hot water cylinders.

The previous week, on June 7, Welcome Bay had no street lighting for the entire evening.

Powerco has confirmed a fault at its ripple injection plant resulted in the street lights failing to turn on in Welcome Bay on June 7.

Powerco network operations manager Phil Marsh says an unrelated technical issue last Thursday disrupted the signals that control hot water cylinders in Welcome Bay.

'Powerco wishes to apologise to all affected customers for the inconvenience caused.”

Welcome Bay residents have also expressed concern about frequent power cuts over the past few months, however Phil says these are not related to hot water and street lighting issues. Outages last week were caused by strong winds damaging the network.

Phil says a series of planned power cuts have occurred in the area recently while electricity network upgrade work has been undertaken.

'Powerco provides electricity retailers with details of scheduled outages. Retailers then pass this information on to their customers.”

from Power co, I phoned Trust Power and they had no indication of any faults,so it would cost $78 to get someone out and if it was an internal fault I have to pay and even then I might have to get a Sparky. Also had no street lights either in Maungatapu.Previously the week before we had the power cut off on a Saturday morning for 3-4 hours turned out Power Co were working up the street and the work sheet indicated only 6 houses would be affected ,they took most of the street out and only advised the 6 houses that power would be off.Power Co get your act together and improve your PR.

it's obvious the retailers are not passing on details of outages to their customers. Why did they not advertise through media about the problem with the hot water? How many customers now have to wear the cost of an electrician after thinking it was their cylinder playing up?

We had power, hot water last Thursday
