Homes in 7th Ave have been evacuated following a gas leak this afternoon.
Firefighters were called to 7th Ave, near Devonport Road, just before 1.30pm.
Northern fire communications shift manager Scott Osmond says a digger has struck a gas main.
"Gas authorities are in the area trying to isolate it now. We have evacuated a small area of homes as a precaution."
People are being advised to avoid the area until the scene is safely contained.
