In today's weather we are expecting a fine day with light winds.

High tide is at 11.40am and low tide is at 5.40pm. There's a sea swell of 0.1m with a sea temperature of 16 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 5.05pm.

If you're going fishing the next best fish bite time is between 4.30 and 6.30pm.

In NZ history on this day in 1881 a poll tax was imposed on Chinese. Parliament passed the Chinese Immigrants Act, which introduced a ‘poll tax' of £10 (equivalent to nearly $1700 today) on Chinese migrants and restricted the number allowed to land from each ship arriving in New Zealand.

In world history on this day in 1776 the Declaration of Independence was first printed by John Dunlop in Philadelphia. In 1892 Andrew Beard was issued a patent for the rotary engine. In 1943 the Battle of Kursk, the largest tank battle in history, began.

Today is the birthday of Georges Pompidou, who became Prime Minister of France in 1968. Born in 1911 he once said "A statesman is a politician who places himself at the service of the nation. A politician is a statesman who places the nation at his service."
